Over Qualified

So this is an email I received from a potential employer outlining why I wasn't given a job. I'm happy with the response but honestly I still would have liked the work.

Hi Daniel,

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to come in and meet with us regards this role.

Both the Production Manager and myself were extremely impressed by your experience, your portfolio and the way you chased this role. You come across extremely well in an interview, confident and with a great deal of maturity. Your resume and covering letter was amongst the best I received.

As this role was really at an assistant level, we were aware that someone who had some experience would ultimately find there to be little challenge by what this role offered. We felt that your skills and your portfolio showed a depth that went beyond the needs of this specific role; you’d be a great full-time graphic designer and with your permission, I’d like to keep your details for the freelance opportunities that we have coming up and for future requirements when we have need of graphic design expertise which goes beyond simple outline reproduction. There may be some multimedia projects coming up in which both Mal and myself thought that you might be interested. We’re not at the stage of being able to recruit for this type of work at this moment but very definitely for the near future.

Having worked and recruited designers for quite a while, my only suggestion to you would be that if you’re applying to some of the larger agencies around to have some hard copy examples of your work on hand. Given the fact that you’ve done some multimedia/digital work, maybe invest in a netbook/iPad or small laptop to have on hand for your interview to show your work; your range of work is too good not to be used a tool to sell yourself at the interview and you want to make sure that you have the tools on hand to facilitate this.
